P.E Award

Tuesday 29 April 2014

The Sainsburys School Games Kite mark is a Government led awards scheme to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. Our school has decided to commit ourselves to achieving the bronze award before the end of the year.  One of the minimum requirements is to have our own PE notice board. We are grateful for Mrs. Hart and Miss Wells for their contribution during this project.

Before Easter, we entered our notice board into a local competition with high expectations. The final decision will be made during the coming weeks.

Year 6 - Take Shelter!

As part of our WWII topic, Year 6 have been learning about Anderson Shelters. These shelters were built and erected in gardens in order to protect people from the heavy bombing during WWII.
Year 6 have developed their designing skills and used a range of materials, including tissue, corrugated card and paints to create their own miniature Anderson Shelters. The finished products are really impressive and everyone approached the challenge with enthusiasm and creativity. Many of the shelters included sand bags, gardening tools and even vegetable patches. 'Dig for Victory!'

Our shelters are constructed to look beautiful but we don't think they are going to save any lives!

Year 4 - The Science of Sound

In our Science lessons this term, Year 4 are exploring how sound works. After discussion, we thought the best way to learn was to make some sounds ourselves...something we are good at! Using a range of musical instruments we created sounds; however, we did not always use them as expected! We drummed on rain sticks and plucked the strings in the sides of the drums.

We have predicted that sounds have something to do with vibrations but will be finding out more in our next lesson...

Year 4 - Science Day

During Year 4's science day laboratory, our day began with bubble mania. Using a range of materials, we explored how to make the most successful bubbles! Did you know that  straws, string, plates and cups can all be used as excellent bubble blowers?  After our work perfecting bubbles, we moved onto some aeronautical engineering...or building egg parachutes. With the help of aeronautical specialists (parents and carers) most of us managed to remain yolk free!  We finished of the day transforming a bottle of diet coke into an exploding fountain using mentos.

Thank you to all the parents and helpers who made our day as successful as our parachutes.

Year 2 - Bupa Start to Move

Year 2 had a visit today from 'Bupa Start to Move', who led a gymnastics session with 2H and 2M. The children were taught how to travel on different parts of their body, on the floor and on apparatus. This developed into using balances and creating sequences using floor work, apparatus and then balancing at the end.

The children and teachers enjoyed their sessions and look forward to them visiting again.

Sports Stars of the Week!

Monday 28 April 2014

Each week outstanding performance, effort and achievement in P.E and sporting activities. is identified by our qualified Sports Coaches and class teachers. Pupils who shine in lessons, clubs and activities outside of school are recognised and celebrated each week in our Friday celebration assembly.

Congratulations to last week's Sports Stars of the Week!

Year 4 - P.E.

Last term Year 4 were honing and perfecting their invasion game skills. We learnt a variety of passes including chest, shoulder and bounce, as well as how to find space and mark an opponent. These skills were then applied to small games, where we tested our new skills on each other.

Everyone really enjoyed developing their knowledge and skills...even the teachers!

Happy St George’s Day at Hilldene!

Wednesday 23 April 2014

Did you know that St. George is the patron saint of England? His emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, and part of the British flag. St George's emblem was adopted by Richard the Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century. The king's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.

St George was a brave Roman soldier who protested against the Romans' torture of Christians and died for his beliefs. The popularity of St George in England stems from the time of the early Crusades when it is said that the Normans saw him in a vision and were victorious.

At Hilldene, we are celebrating St George's Day with a special assembly and activities in our lessons.

Toddler Group - Easter Parade!

Friday 4 April 2014

There was great 'egg-citement' at Toddler Group this week when the children were visited by the Easter Bunny and his loyal Elf! Wearing their beautifully decorated Easter bonnets, the toddlers all paraded in the sunshine, enthusiastically singing songs and playing instruments. As it will be Miley and Toby's birthdays during the Easter holidays, everyone joined in early celebrations with them. Happy Easter to all the toddlers and their families!

We look forward to seeing you all after the holidays when Toddler Group recommences on 30th April.
