Year 6 - A day at Duxford

Friday 27 June 2014

The sun shone brightly as Year 6 children, dressed as evacuees, took part in a special Second World War event at Duxford Imperial War Museum. It was a fantastic day involving a wide range of activities with something of interest for everyone.

Agnes, the ARP (Air Raid Precaution) warden put Year 6 through their paces and taught them all about the Blackout and different attacks that Britain suffered during the Blitz. Bombs were disposed of safely, uniforms were modelled and sirens were sounded. Responding quickly to the gas attack siren was an essential part of their training, and a lot of fun was had ensuring that they could all put on their gas masks quickly and efficiently.

As well as exploring and admiring some of the most iconic aircraft in the world (Spitfires, a Lancaster and the fastest ever Concorde... to name but a few) the children were able to get hands-on experience of real World War II artefacts and talk to experts.

Not only was the day extremely enjoyable I think everyone, including the adults, learnt something too!

Harold Hill Heroes!

Thursday 26 June 2014

Hilldene pupils have been working hard to improve their athleticism over the last few weeks and competing, in year groups, to win a chance to attend the Harold Hill Sports day. Children were selected from years 2,3,4,5 and 6 for the annual event , which is held at Drapers Academy.

Once teams were picked, kits were cleaned, trainers were polished and an  excited team of 40 eager athletes travelled to the track, all hopeful of winning a medal. With the sun bursting through the clouds the day was filled with cheers and excitement as the children valiantly competed in a plethora of events :  Vortex throwing, sprinting, long jump and relay.

At the end of a long day of sport, tired but still excited, the children waited patiently for the results to be announced. Raucous cheers erupted through the Hilldene camp as the announcement was made that the Year 5 team scored the highest amount of points for their year group category! Silence then fell as all the Harold Hill athletes anxiously awaited the overall results of the day. Nails were bitten... lips were chewed...hands were wrung. Finally, it was announced - 3rd place  Broadford Primary, 2nd place Hilldene Primary and 1st place (by a margin) St Ursulas Junior School!  Congratulations Hilldene!

All staff are extremely proud of the children's achievements and their fantastic behaviour throughout the day.

Thank you to all the staff that went along to help cheer the children on and well done to everyone that competed in school and the children that attended the Sports day.

Great sports success all around!

Year 6 Build Bridges!

Monday 23 June 2014

Last week Year 6 took on the challenge of designing and building bridges to safely transport a 'vehicle' across a 'river'. Each team carried out research of existing bridges. They discussed the purpose of a bridge, how they differ in design and their strengths and weaknesses.

Armed with 50 art straws, 20 pieces of scrap paper, 8 lollipop sticks and a roll of sticky tape, the budding designers took on the task of making a bridge to carry a toy car from one side of a tray full of water to the other. With a healthy competitive spirit, each team took to the task wholeheartedly, absorbed themselves completely in their work and didn't want to pack away!

When tested, four out of the five bridges successfully transported the car safely from one side of the river to another!

Year 4 Poetry

This week year 4 children have been doing the teaching!

Inspired by the plot in their current class book (Holes by Louis Sachar), pupils in Year 4 took on the challenge of becoming teachers last week! One of the characters doesn't know how to read or write and doesn't know any nursery rhymes! Therefore, he asks one of the other characters to teach him. To understand the challenges and rewards of teaching someone, the Year 4 trainee tutors taught some Reception pupils poems!

Watch out teachers, they were pretty good!

Hilldene's Special Guest

5-a-day at Hilldene!

Hilldene staff and pupils welcomed a special guest on Wednesday for a day of dancing, fitness and team work. Carly (from 5-a-day) came to work the minds and bodies of Year 6 and 4W through a fun filled day of circuit training. Children and staff were encouraged to compete against each other and learn more about their own personal fitness.

All classes left the session energised and with big smiles on their ruby-red faces!

Thank you to Carly for a fantastic day!

Harold Hill Kwik Cricket Tournament

Wednesday 18 June 2014

Pyrgo Primary's new initiative to hold a Kwik Cricket Tournament was well attended by all surrounding schools last week.

Although Hilldene's only defeat was against the tournament favourites (Pyrgo Primary), the Hilldene team showed good sportsmanship, had a great time and hopefully will continue playing cricket!
