Reception visit Hilldene Shops

On Wednesday, the children in Reception classes visited Hilldene Shops as part of their topic 'People Who Help Us.' Despite their excitement, all the children remembered how to 'keep safe' when walking to and from the shops and were very sensible. The enthusiastic shoppers visited the pet shop, the local supermarket store 'Sainsburys' and many more shops, looking at the different types of goods for sale. Having prepared a shopping list beforehand, they eagerly bought ingredients to make chocolate rice krispy cakes with marshmallows and fudge, before returning safely to school.

Nursery Travel the World!

The Nursery topic this term is 'Around the World'. We have been making and tasting food from the countries we have learnt about so far. We made and ate some delicious pasta when we were learning about Italy. During our Spanish week we tasted a tortilla made from eggs and potatoes. When we were learning about France we tasted some scrumptious pain au chocolat's. We can't wait to see what we get to try next!!

Year 1 Puppets!

Thursday 29 January 2015

In Year 1 we are currently learning about toys and have found out about the materials they are made from and how our toys differ from toys of the past.  Last week we had great fun making our own moveable puppets by using split pins to attach the arms and legs.  We began by designing our puppets and then independently cut out the body parts and transferred our designs using pens, pencils and lots of fabric!  We are very proud of our completed work.

School Games Crew

Wednesday 28 January 2015

Following a successful day of training last week, our School's Games Crew enjoyed their second training session with Mrs Tucker from the Havering Sports Collective on Monday. The aim of the session was to teach them how to collect data from a competition and analyse it.  Using the data collected in the previous session, they created a spreadsheet of information which allowed them to easily gather information about the best performances.  Without a doubt, it was a worthwhile morning developing skills they will be using  in future competitions!

Year 4 - Haka competition

Today was year 4's interclass Haka competition. All three classes were in high spirits as they practiced their game faces and routines; aiming to psyche each other out in the style of New Zealand's, 'All Blacks.'

Following a preliminary competition to decide who would go through to the head to head final, we all put on fantastic performances  and it was a very close call. 4K and 4W made it through to the final with 4AW making the final decision.

In a landslide victory 4K were declared winners!

Well done to all that participated all the performances were excellent!

People Who Help Us - Reception class visitors

Tuesday 27 January 2015

Continuing with their topic of 'People Who Help Us,' the lucky children in the Reception classes have received visits from PC Wayne, Paramedic Ruth and the local Firefighters, who have all taken the time to talk to the children about their roles and answer any of their questions. Without a doubt, seeing these important people in person and hearing about their jobs has helped all the children to develop a better understanding of their community. However, the most popular  visitors by far were the Firefighters, because the children loved the experience of sitting in the fire engine!

Thank you to all the staff who have arranged the visits and to the visitors for spending valuable time with the children.

Netball victory!

Monday 26 January 2015

Hooray for Hilldene!

Last Tuesday, Hilldene's Hi 5 netball team, faced their rival school - St.Ursula's Junior school. A brave battle of netballing skills was fought and with goals gallantly scored by Mary (3), the final score was 5-3 to Hilldene!

Hooray for Hilldene!

School Games Crew

Last Wednesday  the School Games Crew spent the afternoon enjoying a variety of sporting activities with Mrs Tucker from the Havering Sports Collective. It was a fabulous afternoon full of fun, sporty games and activities, our favourite being completing a circuit of 5 different activities (running, sidestepping, beanbag throwing, speed jumping and moving balls). All the results were recorded and the data will be analysed. All in all a fantastic and worthwhile afternoon learning  how to host a sports day!

Mark it! Don't lose it!

Thursday 22 January 2015

On Friday our lovely local Police officer PC Wayne came and spoke to Year 6 pupils about how to protect their property. Hundreds of phones are stolen every year and his helpful advice will enable us to keep our valuables safer.

By marking our valuables with our postcode and door number, police officers like PC Wayne can identify the owner of stolen goods. Every child was given a special pen to take home and mark their property in order to help with home crime prevention. PC Wayne recommended the children refrained from marking their siblings!

Charity Thanks

Wednesday 21 January 2015

Congratulations and thank you to all the staff, pupils and parents for your generous charitable donations to Children in Need and St Francis Hospice. Both charities have written to thank you all for your kindness and to wish you all a happy and healthy 2015.
Thank you for your continued support.

This is a clip from the talented 4W's PE lesson in which they are performing the Haka.  As you can see they are truly terrifying. 4K and 4AW better watch out next week when year 4 are coming together for a Haka competition.

Year 3 - Library Trip

Monday 19 January 2015

3AM and 3D had a lovely morning at Harold Hill library on Thursday 15th January.  The weather was kind to us and didn't rain, so we had a pleasant walk.  When we arrived, we learnt all about how to find fiction books by looking for authors' surnames and we practised putting surnames in alphabetical order to help us with this.  We found out that members of Harold Hill library can borrow books from any library in any London borough.  We also learnt that we can reserve a book if we can't find it in the library and the library will get it for us.

We listened to a fantastic story which made us all laugh and then chose a library book to take back to school.  The librarian explained to us how we can all join the library for free and she gave us library forms.

If your child would like a library joining form and hasn't brought one home, the Year 3 teachers have spares.

3SK will be having their library trip very soon.

CHICKEN! Road Safety Show

Friday 16 January 2015

This week Year 5 and Year 6 watched an entertaining and informative Cycle and Pedestrian Safety show. As well as learning about the importance of Road Safety, they also improved their awareness of the effects of peer pressure. After the show there was an exciting, interactive workshop which enabled the children to develop their self confidence when making tricky decisions. Not only will we now be safer on the streets, we can be more assertive too!

Welcome Back

Tuesday 13 January 2015

As we embark on our second week back at school following the holidays, we hope that you have managed to settle back into the school routine easily and you are looking forward to the year ahead as much as we are. Another exciting term is planned with many exciting events and activities in our school. Please see the school newsletter and diary dates for all the information.

People Who Help Us

Monday 12 January 2015

In Reception, we have begun the topic 'People Who Help Us' with a visit from P C Wayne, who helped us with a crime scene after the teachers' iPads mysteriously disappeared! Using their detective skills, all the children busily investigated fingerprints and looked for clues around the classroom area and the garden.

Thankfully, the iPads have been recovered!

Next week we look forward to a visit  from our local fire fighters!
