Good News from Havering Libraries

Monday, 14 January 2019

Havering Library Service no longer charge children library fines for books taken out on their tickets and as it’s ‘Join up January’ we hope this will encourage you to join your child to your local library and take advantage of all the thousands of free story books, factual books and e-books that it offers. Reading for pleasure is an important part of your child’s development and helps them to develop socially, cognitively and emotionally.

Veggie Run and Stubbers Partnership

HES Catering will be awarding six schools during the Spring term with a FREE 'Learning Outside of the Classroom' activity day for 30 pupils at Stubbers Adventure Centre plus free transport for the day.

The top six schools who achieve the greatest percentage meal increase against their roll number from January - March will each win the above prize.

Learning outside of the classroom dates:

27 & 28 February 27 & 28 March 29 March – (2 schools on the same day) 9am - 3pm

Stubbers Outdoor Centre has created two bespoke Learning Outside of the Classroom (LOTC) days to enable children to develop their independence, confidence, problem solving skills whilst working with their peers.

REWARD DAY  A class can benefit from three adventurer packed activities designed to develop pupils confidence, build team morale all whilst having fun in the great outdoors

Activities included in the day are: • Commando Camp Using the assault course, plus children will develop fire and shelter building skills.

• Climbing Using either the “Rick Grice Memorial” outdoor 11 metre climbing wall or innovative 13 metre six sided climbing tower with graded climbs using bolt on holds. (Suitable for: Year 2 upwards)

• Archery Shoot for gold on Stubbers outdoor range. This activity develops children’s skill and confidence. (Suitable for: Year 2 upwards)

Children benefit from a day in the woodland, using hand and power tools to design and build tree houses and other wooden structures. This is a wonderful “hands off” programme where children receive only safety boundaries by supervisors who provide guidance only.

Additional information  Stubber’s operates an instructor ratio of 1:10, dividing 30 students between three instructors, to manage the various activities. They recommend a 1:10 ratio for teachers also, although this is dependent on individual schools risk assessments. Children will be outside for the duration of the day, so will require warm clothing and footwear, including a hat and gloves, a packed lunch and a spare change of clothing in case of heavy rainfall.

JTAs - Local Research

Over the past couple of days, our Year 5 JTAs have been discovering all sorts of fun sights and things to do at our local parks. All this ‘research’ is related to their role in helping to edit the next edition of Taking Steps magazine which is based upon the theme of walking. It was hard work, but someone had to do it...

Year 4 - Computing

In Year 4 we have started our new computing unit 'We are co-authors'. The children have learnt about Wikipedia pages and have spent time gathering information to be used on our very own Wikipedia page.

Year 5 - Literacy

Friday, 11 January 2019

This week in Literacy we have been looking at leaflets. As a group, we looked at different leaflets to identify what features we could include in our own.

As a table we created a success criteria for information leaflets which we shared as a class to create a class success criteria. We will be using this to write our own leaflets next week.
