In order to support their learning about World War II,
Year 6 visited Braintree Museum. Travelling back in time to 1939, the children
experienced a dramatic air-raid and subsequent evacuation to the countryside.
They were also able to see and touch a range of historical artefacts: pieces of
bombs, identity cards, ration books, chamber pots and tins of powdered egg to
name but a few.
A variety of
military uniforms and other items of clothing were modelled by the young
historians. There was even a 1940's wedding dress made from a parachute, which
was resourcefully created by a young bride when fabric was rationed. It was an
extremely interesting day and the children were able to see history come to
life.
