In Science, we have been learning about materials and their properties. On Monday, we went on a material hunt around the school to explore different objects and determine what material they are made from. The children worked extremely hard and challenged themselves to explain why the material was used and if there was an alternative material that could have been used. Well done 2A!

In Year 4, we have been learning all about electricity and circuits. The children have been investigating different materials and components which could be used as switches in a circuit. They have also made their own switches using split pins and paperclips. Some of the children even created their own mini-fans using a motor.
It was brilliant to see so many budding electricians in the year group!

Move over Mary Berry and Jamie Oliver! This week Year 6 have been baking. As part of our topic on World War II, we have been learning about rationing. With sugar and eggs in short supply, carrots were often used to sweeten cakes and biscuits (cookies). We followed a 1940's recipe to make carrot cookies.
Carrots were the home front's secret weapon. The Ministry of Food propaganda machine tried to convince children that carrots on sticks were just as tasty as ice-creams and that eating lots of carrots helped you 'see in the dark' during blackouts. This might not be completely true, but our carrot cookies were fun to make and surprisingly tasty.

This week pupils in Year 1 have been very busy! In Literacy lessons we have been working on the story of The Gigantic Turnip. We have acted out the story and re-written it in full sentences. We produced some exciting pieces of writing and our teachers are very proud. In Maths lessons we have been learning to write subtraction number sentences. We even created our own subtraction word problems and solved them. In Topic lessons we became chefs, designing and creating our very own pizzas... yummy! We now know which food groups our pizza toppings come from and we had great fun making these!

In Year 1 we are currently learning about toys and have
found out about the materials they are made from and how our toys differ from
toys of the past. Last week we had great
fun making our own moveable puppets by using split pins to attach the arms and
legs. We began by designing our puppets
and then independently cut out the body parts and transferred our designs using
pens, pencils and lots of fabric! We are
very proud of our completed work.

Year
6 have been using clay to create Mayan Pyramids. The original versions were
built by the Mayan people who lived in Mexicao, nearly 3,000 years ago.
They were constructed for sacrificial rituals and sacred ceremonies using only
wooden tools. Some pyramids were 200 feet high, with traps, tunnels and secret
doors. We made detailed miniature versions, including steps and
temples at the top - it was lots of fun and proved how incredibly
clever the Mayans were at architecture and construction!

During Black History month Year 1 found out about Lewis
Hamilton, the famous Formula One racing driver.
We read a story about his life and used the internet to find out even
more information. Here are some of the
facts we learnt...

Year

America two thousand years ago. Weaving was a very important part of their
culture. Using wool, lolly sticks and paper a lot of fun was had creating
patterns and weaving our own designs.
