Year 5 - Writing to persuade

Tuesday, 17 March 2020

In Year 5, we have been writing to persuade. Before we did this, we had a class debate about whether Aunt Glo and Rashid should contact the press as their son has disappeared. Surprisingly Year 5 were were extremely good at arguing their point using evidence from the text.

We then used the information from the debate to write to persuade the reader. The last part of the journey was to edit our work.

We used editing stations to remain focused with what we needed to include. These stations included; punctuation, grammar, sentence structure, uplevelling words and spelling. Here are some pictures of our editing stations.

Year 5 - Science Day

Friday, 13 March 2020

Year 5 really enjoyed science day yesterday. They were on a journey to Antarctica trying to help Jason decide which type of material was the best to use for keeping the heat in when out in the cold.

As you can see, we were really enjoying finding which one was the best.

Year 5 - World Book Week

Friday, 6 March 2020

This week, it has been an enjoyable, jam-packed week for World Book Week. In Year 5 we have discussed the importance of tress for the environment and created art work with and without trees. We also used our imagination to create character descriptions of the Once-ler and the sequel to The Lorax. What happened once the final Truffla seed was given to the man? Becoming authors, we planned and created our own story using Goggle Docs.

We also learnt not to judge a book by it's cover. We were given a book to look at. First of all we thought about whether we would read it based on the front cover. Lots of us said no based on the title and picture. Once we began reading the book, we changed our minds.

Year 5 - Cricket

Friday, 14 February 2020

For the whole of this half term 5R and 5W have been lucky enough to receive some additional cricket sessions from a Chance to Shine coach, organised by Essex County Cricket Club. During this time they have developed a number of skills associated with cricket, including bowling, batting and catching.

Both classes have also had the opportunity to play several matches at the end of their lessons, something they particularly enjoyed taking part in. Bring on the summer and more opportunities to take part in cricket lessons!

Year 5 - Maths Day

Friday, 7 February 2020

Today is maths day! Year 5 have been experimenting with the skills they have learnt this year. They were given the number of 2,020 as their number for the day. They created calculations and word problems with the answer 2,020.

Year 5 also researched 20 different scientific symbols and mathematicians. They created posters explaining what they found.

Their final activity which they participated in was creating Fibonacci spirals. They learnt what a Fibonacci number was then used these skills to create different spiral patterns using these numbers.

Year 5 had lots of fun and worked very hard today!
